On August 19–20, the Kiruna Church in Sweden will be moved from its current location in the old town center to a new site closer to the new city core. The relocation is one-of-a-kind and has generated great interest both locally and internationally. It’s been in planning for over 20 years. During the event – “The Great Church Walk” – visitors can follow the church along its entire route as the move is broadcasted live, and enjoy a rich program of activities in City Hall Square.

Eltel’s role in the relocation
To enable live coverage of the event, Eltel in Kiruna was commissioned by Gironet – Kiruna Municipality – to secure communication along the entire relocation route. This ensures that both audio and video can be transmitted in real time without interruptions.
“Our task is to make sure the technology works all the way, no matter where the church is at any given moment. This isn’t just any assignment – it’s a project that ties together history, culture, and technology. It’s incredibly rewarding that our team in Kiruna can contribute to allowing people across the globe to follow the relocation live – from the very first meter to the last, without missing a moment of this historic journey,” says Frans Wendtland, Project Manager at Eltel.
Thanks to Eltel’s efforts, everyone, whether on-site or watching from afar, can witness the historic relocation as Kiruna Church settles into its new home in the city center.
