Enabling grid-ready battery infrastructure in the Nordics

5 MIN Alexandra Kärnlund Alexandra Kärnlund, Director, Communications

Eltel Denmark and E&B Renewables have developed and delivered a repeatable execution model for battery energy storage system projects in Denmark.

Through several completed BESS projects of 2–3 MW and above, supported by additional projects delivered through a wider supplier setup, the collaboration demonstrates how local technical expertise, early documentation control and structured project execution can help move battery projects from development to operational readiness.

Battery energy storage is becoming increasingly important as the Nordic energy system integrates more wind and solar power

Batteries can support grid flexibility, balance intermittent generation and help stabilize electricity systems under pressure from electrification, renewable generation and new large-scale power demand.

In Denmark, the market is developing quickly. According to the case, Energinet connection cases for battery systems have increased from around 400 MW to more than 6,000 MW in less than two years. This points to strong investor appetite.

Turning battery projects into operational assets

The approach has been to create a delivery model that can absorb market complexity and still bring projects safely into operation.

As Nicolaj Brask Christiansen, CEO of E&B Renewables, explains:

”Eltel and E&B work good together because of aligned values and flexible mindset, which is crucial in long-lasting relations and to get complex assets like BESS well over the finish-line.”

The solution: a repeatable delivery model for Danish BESS projects

Eltel Denmark and E&B Renewables have built their collaboration through several joint BESS projects, including projects in the Næstved area in Denmark. By working across multiple projects in the same geography, with similar authorities, suppliers and technical requirements, the parties have been able to refine a practical execution model.

The model is based on three core principles:

1. Early technical alignment2. One coordinated delivery line3. Local execution capacity
Component selection, documentation requirements and technical interfaces are clarified earlier in the process. This reduces the risk of late redesign, repeated engineering work and delays during permitting, installation or commissioning. The collaboration creates a clearer connection between development, construction, technical documentation, testing and operational readiness. This is especially important in a market where responsibility can otherwise become fragmented across multiple stakeholders.Eltel brings hands-on infrastructure delivery capability, technical project management and experience with power infrastructure in a regulated Nordic environment. This helps turn project plans into physical assets connected to the electricity system.

“The collaboration with Eltel has been characterized by high quality and a good direct dialogue. We have a common understanding of how projects should be delivered.”

Results and impact

Technical result

Eltel and E&B Renewables have completed several joint battery projects of 2–3 MW and above, with further experience from four additional related projects delivered through another supplier setup.

The early projects have helped establish a repeatable approach to:

  • Battery project execution
  • Electrical infrastructure coordination
  • Technical documentation
  • Fire, testing and compliance processes
  • Supplier and component coordination
  • Final testing and operational readiness

This approach combines Nordic infrastructure expertise with practical delivery capacity across power, communication and field services.

For international investors entering or scaling in the Nordic BESS market, Eltel can act as a local execution partner that reduces complexity and strengthens project bankability.

Eltel brings:

  • Local Nordic infrastructure knowledge
  • Experience with power and grid-related infrastructure
  • Technical field delivery capacity
  • Understanding of safety, documentation and compliance requirements
  • Ability to coordinate across customers, suppliers, authorities and grid stakeholders
  • Long-term service and operations capability
  • A delivery model that can be scaled from early projects to larger plants

This is especially relevant as the BESS market moves from smaller early-stage projects to larger, more complex battery plants.
